Description
This training introduces the fundamentals of a Respiratory Protection Program (RPP) and reminds learners that respirators should be used as a last resort, after applying the hierarchy of controls. It explains how to assess hazards, select appropriate equipment, and follow essential practices to ensure effective, consistent, and compliant respiratory protection.
Target audience
Employers, supervisors, and workers exposed to airborne contaminants in their work environment, as well as anyone required to use, manage, or supervise the use of respiratory protective equipment as part of a respiratory protection program.
Instructional objectives
- Understand the principles of a respiratory protection program and the associated regulatory requirements
- Explain the hierarchy of controls and identify the role of respiratory protective equipment within it
- Identify situations and risks that require the use of respiratory protection
- Select appropriate respiratory protective equipment based on contaminants and working conditions
- Properly use respiratory protective equipment by following best practices (fit, seal, and conditions of use)
- Perform equipment inspections and recognize signs of wear or defects
- Apply best practices for cleaning, maintenance, repair, and storage
- Understand the factors that influence the service life of filters and cartridges
- Understand the roles and responsibilities of the different stakeholders involved in the program
- Apply basic rules in both normal operations and special or emergency situations
